Questions We All Ask ...

Be a part of asking your questions, wrestling the issues of :

  1. Why does God allow bad things to happen to good people? How can God be loving & just at the same time? Why would God care about me when there are so many people suffering & have more serious problems? Why do bad things happen to good people? How can God let things like 911 / Tsunami / Haiti happen if He’s a god of love?  How can a good God allow suffering & injustice?  Why is there so much suffering in the world? If God is in control of everything - why does he allow bad things to happen to good people? Why does God not just punish the wicked, evil, bad (murderers, rapists, etc)? Years ago, a friend of mine declined to be a Christian. My friend told me 'she' has known a couple who both were Christians. Somehow, one day their only son died when young. The couple lost their faith to God as their son had been taken away. I still don't have a good answer to my friend. If there is a God where was he when I was defenceless and was being abused? How do I trust in a god who did not stop the abuse or pain? If I were to try to accept Christ how do I get over how angry I am at him for not helping me?  How can I trust God who did not seem to care what was happening to me? Someone had heard that Job isn’t a real story but a fictitious one just put in the Bible to help us through hard times.
  2. Church is about rules / church is judgemental. Church isn’t relevant anymore. Church is for the weak. Why are Christians so determined to give the impression of being SO judgemental instead of “just walk(ing) across the room” (great book with a great message to all Christians)? Why don’t Christians come across as a bit more normal and what is normal? Will I ever have a normal good life like those people at church? Where is God and what is there left to do when you have been abused by leadership in the church? I don’t want to be a Christian if that is what they have done! Perceptions of Christianity by workmates is that it is a Violent Religion, Religion of Capitalism/ Communism, Source of pain & hurt, Destructive to society, not interested in the individual.
  3. ‘Why is Jesus more than just a prophet?’ The one I come up against all the time is the Muslim one 'What do you believe about the Son of God? How can the Almighty Transcendent One stoop to have sex with a human being? That is blasphemy!' Why should we care about Jesus? What about other founders of religion (Buddha, Mohammed, etc)? What makes Christianity true and other religions false? How dare we claim to be the only ones saved?
  4. How do I know the bible is the truth and not written by fraudsters? -    Can we prove the Bible? Can we trust the Bible? Didn't someone corrupt the Bible? How can you believe the Bible is true, when it is written by humans?  Why are there numerous contradictions in fact in the Bible? What was so special about Jesus and how could he be the son of God and also be the son of Joseph and of David's blood line? Other than your Bible what proof have you that the only way to God is through Jesus? A friend said "I just don't buy that whole Bible-is-truth thing”.
  5. What is the difference between Christianity and other religions where there is faith and a high being? When someone says; There are many paths to Spiritual fulfilment you just need to have faith of some sort. How do we know that the God in Christianity isn’t the same God that is worshipped in other faiths, eg: Allah? A good friend of mine said - "I like a lot of what Jesus said and did - but when he said he's the only way to heaven - I just can't accept that"  - what about all the other religions like Buddhism, etc... Aren’t all religions pointing to the same god anyway?  Why is Christianity different? Where is God in this world when there is all the evil/natural disasters/innocent people/babies suffering
  6. I do good things, I don’t steal, I am nice to people. Why do you think that you are any better qualified to go to Heaven than me? I’m a good person so that should be enough to get me a place in heaven? I have a good life now, so why would I need Christianity and how can you call me a sinner?
  7. What tangible proof do you have that God exists?
  8. Explain the Holy Spirit? (I want to do this without sounding like a looney!)
  9. How do you know what is true when everything is relative?
  10. Isn’t Christianity for people who need a crutch?
  11. Andrew Denton interviewing Dame Elizabeth Murdoch where she says “There is no personal God, I believe when you die, that’s it” What do you say to that?
  12. The implicit question underlying that I guess is “why would I follow Jesus when religions, and religious beliefs, have been the cause of wars and great conflicts, and not the solution as they promise to be?”
  13. I met a Christian once and he behaved badly / ripped me off / was a hypocrite.
  14. Evolution is at odds with the Biblical record of creation; how can we reconcile this? (This has been a big topic)
  15. Interestingly, my group of friends got right into a deep discussion about ethics and morality in the last couple of sessions last year - we started exploring the question of how can ethics and morality exist without God (or in other words, how can there be a "law" without a "lawgiver", and how is our adherence to this "law" assessed without a judge?). I expect this to be a hot topic in the group when things start up again in the coming weeks, especially as we look at conscience; I can give you further feedback as things progress if you're interested.
  16. Why God is a western person no other race?
  17. Why creation isn't scientific enough?
  18. Why Christians like to convert others?
  19. How does God have control and we have free will?
  20. Or a very similar question – How do God’s purposes prevail if we have free will?
  21. How do we know that the creation story is real & not made-up/just a story?
  22. In spiritual warfare, when angels & demons fight, what happens to them when they lose & do they die?
  23. How do I give up control of my life to God when I think I do a better job of protecting myself than he does?
  24. Was there something wrong with me for that to happen to me?
  25. Isn’t Christianity/Church really just a death cult? Death cult = cult obsessed with death (morbid interest in Jesus death, in life after death vs. life in the here & now), focussed on increasing the suffering of its members (why do we consider suffering a good thing etc.),
